Eastland County is home to my mother's ranch, and only within the last few years have I come to appreciate it. Even more so than my childhood home on the Guadalupe River, it's a place of rest and relaxation, as well as sweltering heat in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. It's also home to a significant chunk of Texas history -- an oil boom in the 1920s whose effects are still seen today, even though the oil is long gone.
